Two of the nine PhD candidates in the University of Edinburgh final of this year's 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition come from the School of Divinity. In recent months, Jessie Fubara-Manuel and Berti Jozsa have won School and College rounds to compete in the online event to be held Thursday 25 June 2020, 2.30-3.45pm. About 3MT The 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition requires PhD students to explain, for an intelligent lay audience, what their research is, how they are doing it, what they have discovered and why it is an important contribution to knowledge - in just 3 minutes, using only one slide. The competition is based on a concept developed by the University of Queensland which quickly spread and is now global. The University of Edinburgh has run a 3MT competition every year since 2013. The initiative is organised by the University’s Institute for Academic Development (IAD), which also offers advice and practice sessions for participants. Invaluable training The School’s involvement in this year’s competition has been organised and encouraged by the Director of our Graduate School, Dr Emma Wild-Wood. Dr Wild-Wood says, “As researchers we all need to be able to explain our work clearly and succinctly to non-specialist as well as expert audiences. The 3 Minute Thesis competition is great training for that. It can also help students to see their research from a different perspective, making it more robust.” Going online Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, it is not possible for entrants to present their thesis in the usual live, face to face format, so this year’s final will take place via video submission on Collaborate. The event will be streamed live. Judges will decide the winner and runner up, and there will also be a live people’s choice vote. Support Jessie and Berti!
