Let there be light! New College Quad lighting shines bright

Thanks to a generous donation from Alumnus Rev Dr Robert Funk, New College has been able to install beautiful new lighting for our quad area

This project was essential for us to upgrade our lighting system and ensure that the quad is bright enough during the darker winter nights.

The new lights will also mean that the building can be lit up in a variety of unique colours for special occasions throughout the year.

The work was completed over the latter half of 2024, comprising of two different processes. The first process required overhauling the cast iron lanterns fixed over the doors and overhanging the Assembly Hall steps. The second process involved installing new floodlights close to roof level in the quad.

We’d like to thank the University of Edinburgh Estates team for completing this project. We'd also like to thank the generous support provided over the years by Robert A. Funk, alumnus 1962–63, for the enhancement of the New College building, clocktower, and lighting.
