Calida Chu wins EASSSR essay prize

The East Asian Society of Scientific Study of Religion (EASSSR) has awarded its 2019 essay prize to PhD candidate Calida Chu.

The Center on Religion and Chinese Society will award Calida with $1,000 towards her expenses for attending this year’s EASSSR conference and presenting her paper.

The conference is entitled ‘East-West Encounters and Religious Change in Modernizing East Asia. It will take place 27-28 July, Hokkaido University, Japan.

Calida’s essay, ’Social Functionality of Multiple Religious Belonging in Modern China’, was originally written for one of her MTh classes here at New College.

As well as being a PhD candidate in World Christianity, Calida is well known within the School of Divinity, University of Edinburgh, as Choir Director for New College Choir.
