Book Launch: The Trials of Mary Johnsdaughter Image Join us in celebrating the launch of The Trials of Mary Johnsdaughter by Christine De Luca. Christine De Luca is a former Edinburgh Makar, celebrated for her award winning Shetlandic poetry. In The Trials of Mary Johnsdaughter De Luca combines her poetic prose with Shetlandic dialogue, transporting the reader to 18th century Shetland, where a ship is wrecked on an island’s isolated shores. The novel is based on true events in Waas, Shetland. In the heart of a tight-knit crofting community, Mary Johnsdaughter struggles against the prejudices of her community, further strained by the survivors of the shipwreck, The Batchelor. As she stands accused of having sinned in the eyes of the church; will she survive the humiliation? Will she become an outcast? Will one moment cost her everything? We warmly invite you to join us for a drinks reception before Christine De Luca gives a reading and talks about her new novel, with an opportunity for questions and book signings at the end.
