Please tell us a bit about yourself and your current career 

Current position: Widening Participation Officer

Just finished an internship at Student Recruitment and Admissions at the University of Edinburgh and about to start employment as Widening Participation Officer, University of York.

What did you enjoy most about your subject?

My time at the University involved not only focusing on my academic work, but also being involved extra activities that were on offer. I was a Student Ambassador for the university, a member of the LEAPS team and a student mentor.

These were all invaluable and fun experiences and combining these with the enjoyment I was having studying different courses at New College, I decided that I wanted to pursue a career in Student Recruitment in order to help other potential students have the chance to attend university.

What specific skills did you develop whilst attending the University of Edinburgh?

Doing a degree in Religious Studies has given me skills that many employees are seeking. I am able to organise and prioritise a work load and work to deadlines. During my course I had to do many presentations, which has been extremely useful as a job in Student Recruitment means giving presentations to school students. I am able to work in groups, due to the times when we would have to do joint presentations. Studying Religious Studies also means that I now have an open mind about society and I am able to listen and learn from others.

All these skills are important in Student Recruitment as you must be able to listen to a potential student and give them accurate and well thought out advice.

Why would you recommend your subject to other students?

For me, university brings about freedom, choice and opportunity and every person should have the chance to experience this.

My four years at New College were some of the best of my life and I have learnt so much. I wish that I could do my university life all over again, but I feel that I am now ready to enter the world of employment and put everything that I have learnt to good use.
