Thanks to the generous support of the Khyentse Foundation, Dr Paul Fuller (Teaching Fellow in Buddhist Studies, School of Divinity) will be spending part of his time visiting schools, creating resources, and curating events for teachers and pupils, to enhance their understanding of Buddhism.

Schools outreach has been a part of the work of EBS since its inception, with events and resources for teachers speaking to the third aspect of its mission: “Promote improved public understanding of Buddhism.” As scholars, it believes we have a responsibility to support teachers in delivering inspiring and accurate content about Buddhism in schools.

The Edinburgh Buddhist Studies network’s blog provides a growing selection of resources for school teachers and other educators working to communicate Buddhism in new and interesting ways. The resources are created and/or curated by members of EBS and are free to use. Events are also advertised on the blog, and recordings of our teacher webinars are uploaded to the site. A new series of webinars begins in January 2022, offering a range of perspectives on the Buddha’s place within Buddhism.

It is exciting to be able to expand this work further, with a substantial increase in the staff time that we have available for developing stronger links with schools, and better support for the teaching of Buddhism.

Schools Outreach

The EBS Outreach Officer is part of a wider programme of schools outreach work currently being run by the School of Divinity. This work is being coordinated by Dr Linden Bicket, who has recently taken up the post of Schools Outreach Officer for Divinity.

I am really looking forward to expanding our Schools Outreach Programme as I feel it’s vital to educate potential students at school level about what we study here at Divinity and how relevant it is to everyday life

Points of Arrival: A digital resource pack for schools on historical Jewish immigration to Scotland

Also within the School, Dr Hannah Holtschneider has developed Points of Arrival. A team from the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow and the Scottish Jewish Archives Centre put together a teaching resource on immigrants and refugees who came to Scotland to escape poverty, persecution and war. The teaching resource can be used across the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence.
