Dr Lloyd John Ogilvie (1930–2019)

A visiting student at New College in 1955–56, Lloyd Ogilvie served as minister of First Presbyterian Hollywood before becoming chaplain to the United States Senate in 1995, a position from which he retired in 2003.

After his year of study in Edinburgh, he maintained a lifelong friendship with Professor James S Stewart, becoming a regular visitor to Scotland and a generous supporter of New College. In 2003, he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity by the University. Though an outstanding preacher, author, and church leader of international distinction, Lloyd had a modest and unassuming manner. He valued his links with New College and offered us valuable support, not least in the establishment of the J. S. Stewart Scholarship Fund. The Lloyd Ogilvie Institute of Preaching was established in his honour at Fuller Theological Seminary in 2006, with the Principal of New College participating in the inaugural service. Lloyd once told me that he would speak with incoming members of the US Senate to remind them that they had a fourfold duty to God, to their families, to their country and to their party, always in that order of priority. As we salute his many achievements, we extend our condolences to his widow Doris, and to his family. [David Fergusson]
