This fund was started in 1996, the year of the College's 150th anniversary. The association with the anniversary was an indication that giving to the Fund was considered to be an appropriate offering by those who have benefited from study in the College in the past. The naming of the Fund after Rev Professor James S Stewart underlined this further, since many former students have remembered with affection and appreciation the teaching of James Stewart. Prof Stewart was Professor of New Testament Language, Literature and Theology from 1946 to 1966. He was reckoned to be one of the greatest Scottish preachers of the twentieth century.
