He was named as one of Britain's top 100 public intellectuals by Prospect magazine, and The Independent newspaper has called him 'Britain's own Muslim polymath'. He is the editor of the magazine ‘Critical Muslim’ and author of numerous books including ‘Desperately Seeking Paradise: Journeys of a Skeptical Muslim’ (2004), 'Reading the Qur’an: The Contemporary Relevance of the Sacred Text of Islam’ (2011), and ‘A Person of Pakistani Origins’ (2018).
